West Indian and Sussex star Jofra Archer could soon be eligible to feature for England at next year’s World Cup as well as the 2019 Ashes series, according to The Times.

The Barbadian all-rounder, who has been capped at the Under-19 level by the West Indies, will automatically become eligible to represent England – his father’s country from 2022 – but that could soon be brought forward.

The England and Wales Cricket Board is apparently set to intervene and tweak residency rules, which would allow the 23-year-old to play international cricket for the Three Lions.

Archer could technically be playing international cricket for the West Indies now but has opted to wait and see if the opportunity with England will materialise.

Since 2012, the ECB have had a seven-year residency period in place for those born outside of the UK and the players in question have to spend at least 210 days a year in the country annually to be able to change their international allegiance.

However, the report states the governing body of English Cricket could alter its rules so they are in line with the ICC’s four-year residency period, with an option of bringing Archer’s availability forward.

Archer is seen as more of a limited-overs specialist but has also made a promising start to his career in first-class cricket.
