TV tracker swings Indian audience’s attention

The land of spinners, India, doesn’t have much in its past to show for swing bowlers.

Yes, the case looked different when Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan were at their peak and bowling in tandem, but that period did not last for long.

As a result, Indian fans are not the most fervent observers of swing bowling, but the Investec Test series seems to be giving them a totally new experience thanks to the ‘Swing-Tracker’ technology.

The Indian broadcaster for the series, Star Sports, seems to be giving an extra bit of information for every delivery apart from the routine speed-o-meter.

The new technology now offers viewers the exact amount of deviation (or swing) that a ball made from the original path after being delivered by the bowler.

The amount of deviation is shown in centimeters and the data is given out for every ball and the technology seems to be having its effect on the commentary box as well.

Instead of “that swung a lot”, we heard “that deviated 15 cms from its original path” on the first day.

With India headed to England with a new-look swing attack, viewers will be given the chance to see exactly what Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Mohd Shami are made of.
