Pakistan’s Fawad Alam continues to be ignored for selection to the national team but that hasn’t stopped the batsman from piling up the runs in the domestic circuit.

On Tuesday, Fawad became the second fastest Pakistan batsman to notch up 11,000 runs in first-class cricket. The 32-year-old slammed an unbeaten ton on day one of Sui Southern Gas Corporation’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy clash against the Lahore Blue at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The 237 innings taken by the right-hander in bringing up 11,000 first-class runs is only behind the 214 innings taken by legendary Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammad.

It is quicker than the 243 and 246 innings taken by former Pakistan Test stalwarts Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan respectively.

Despite his prolific numbers in the first-class game, Fawad continues to be ignored by Pakistan selectors. The batsman has played only three Tests for Pakistan in his career so far with the last of them coming in November 2009 against New Zealand.

His last appearance in Pakistan colours came in an ODI against Bangladesh in 2015.

Fawad’s dreams of playing Test cricket once again for Pakistan took another blow on Tuesday after he was not named in the Pakistan A team which will face Australia in a four-day practice match at Dubai starting on Saturday.

His rich form in the domestic circuit had raised hopes that Fawad would be given a shot for the ‘A’ team but his name did not feature in the 14-man squad which will be led by Asad Shafiq.

Given the fact that discarded pacers Wahab Riaz and Rahat Ali have been called up to the Pakistan A squad, Fawad’s omission could very well spell the end of any hopes he has of playing Test cricket again anytime soon.
