Inzaman will be aided by fellow former Pakistan internationals Wajahatullah Wasti, Tauseef Ahmed and Wasim Haider, who make up the rest of the selection panel.

A former captain of his country, Inzaman had been coaching Afghanistan and took them to the World T20 where Pakistan began to dismantle their own cricketing structure.

Shahid Afridi left his role as captain of the T20I side before Waqar Younis was given the boot as coach, a role yet to be filled.

Inzaman previously worked as a batting consultant for Pakistan in 2012-13 and this is his first job as a selector.

At a press conference 46-year-old Inzamam said: “This is a very happy thing for me that I am helping Pakistan in any way. After playing I have not been involved in any way so this is the first time.

“I will try to make the right outcome. I want to thank the Afghanistan board for allowing me to come back for national duty. My effort and hope will be that I will be allowed to work independently.

“For the England tour, I will try and select and give the best players. The work is not easy. Let’s not be hurried, lets work with patience and the results will come.

“There is no magic wand to solve all problems. It will take time – some technical aspects, some others, we will sit together and try to solve.”

Meanwhile, bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed will now take on the role of coach at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
