PCB chief Shaharyar has said Pakistan’s new coach will be selected by the first week of May, also confirming that the board is open to the option of both foreign and local coaches.

Waqar Younis resigned after the T20 team’s disastrous performances at the Asia Cup and then World T20, leaving the post vacant.

“The new coach will be appointed by the first week of May and Wasim Akram is also in India for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to discuss with possible candidates,” Shahryar told Press Trust of India.

Moreover, Shaharyar added that they haven’t finalised if they want a foreign or a local coach with the Pakistan cricket team.

Aaqib Javed recently told Sport360 that he was approached by the PCB but stressed he is staying with the UAE.

“I’m still the UAE head coach and am not going anywhere,” Javed told Sport360 last Wednesday. “I’m not leaving. I’m not even applying for the Pakistan job because the speculation is they are going for a foreign coach.

“I got disappointed when people approach you and tell you this is the process. Due to pressure or whatever, it has changed. So I don’t want to give my expertise to people who don’t hold their promises. All of a sudden they are going through a different process. Why didn’t they tell me this before?”

Shaharyar also confirmed that Mohsin Khan had been offered the post of chief selector, but declined it in favour of a coaching position.

“Mohsin is more inclined towards coaching the national team,” said Shaharyar.

The 82-year-old said the board would now make appointments after giving it proper thought, with Pakistan facing tours ahead in England and Australia.
