Waqar Younis resigned as Pakistan coach on Monday after his team’s humiliating exit from the World T20 in the group stage.

Javed was seen as one of the strongest contenders for the position as he has worked with the junior and senior Pakistan teams in various capacities. And the current UAE coach said he is willing to take on the challenge.

“The Pakistan board approached me and said that I am one of the contenders for the job. They asked me that if I was offered the job of the coach, will I be willing to work. I said yes. If I get the job, I will be very happy to coach Pakistan. But if I don’t get it, I won’t be sad,” Javed told Sport360 after landing in the UAE following a vacation back home in Pakistan.

However, since a formal job offer is yet to be made, Javed said there is no need to initiate any interaction with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) regarding his future as UAE coach.

“I am still enjoying my stint here in the UAE. My heart remains with the UAE team. It is too early to have any formal discussions (with the ECB),” he said.

Javed has been with the UAE since 2012 and has overseen significant progress during his tenure. The UAE qualified for the 50-over World Cup for only the second time in 2015, after making their first appearance at a World T20 the previous year.

Before that, he was the coach of Pakistan’s U19 team, taking them to the world title in 2004, and was the bowling coach of the senior side as well.
