India shake Test hoodoo in Australia as Rishabh Pant equals catches record

India’s 10 years of hurt is over as they ended their Test victory drought in Australia, clinching the first game of the four match series by a tense 31 runs.

The omens had not looked good for Australia heading into the fourth innings, as no team had successfully chased a target as large as 323 runs before at the Adelaide Oval.

Only Shaun Marsh (60) reached his half-century and despite some dogged batting from the tail, with Nathan Lyon (38*) briefly giving the hosts real hope,

Ravi Ashwin picked up the final wicket of Josh Hazlewood with just 30 runs to spare.

India’s last successful Test in Australia had come at the WACA back in 2008 while they had not won in Adelaide for 15 years.

It was a particularly special Test for India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, who equalled the world record for most catches in a Test with 11.

He drew level with England’s Russell and South Africa’s AB de Villiers while also surpassing the Indian record of 10 held by Wriddhiman Saha.
