Captain Parthiv Patel led the way as Gujarat took a crucial first innings lead against Mumbai at Indore on Wednesday.

Patel fell just 10 runs short of a well-deserved century as Gujarat ended the day on 291/6, with a lead of 63 and four wickets in hand.

Bhargav Merai and Manprit Juneja also made crucial contributions with the bat. Merai scored 45 while Juneja notched up the 14th first-class half-century of his career.

Juneja was, in fact, very unlucky to be dismissed on 77. After being caught and bowled by Shardul Thakur, the umpires went upstairs to check the front foot. It looked like it was a no-ball, but the TV umpire somewhat surprisingly judged it out.

Chirag Gandhi and Rush Kalaria were unbeaten on 17 and 16 respectively at the end of play on day two.

For Mumbai, Abhishek Nayar was the most impressive of the bowlers – picking up three scalps. Fast bowlers Thakur and Balwinder Sandhu took two wickets and one wicket respectively.

Mumbai 228 all out [Shaw 71, Yadav 57, Gaja 2/46] trail Gujarat 291/6 [Patel 90, Juneja 77, Nayyar 3/91] by 63 runs.
