Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was the recipient of a death threat over the last week, reports IANS.

Ganguly confirmed the same on Monday and mentioned that he has alerted the police about the situation. The source of the letter is currently unknown.

“I got the letter couple of days back. I have informed the police about the same,” said Ganguly.

The 44-year-old was supposed to visit Midnapore [West Bengal] for a university programme and the letter is said to be related to that trip.

Ganguly is one of India’s most influential cricketers after an international career that spanned more than 16 years, the left-hander playing in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs for his country.

He was also captain in the early noughties and is often credited for changing the face of Indian cricket after the match-fixing scandal in 2000.

Ganguly is currently serving as the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
