Virat Kohli most popular celebrity in India, according to Forbes

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has been named the most popular Indian celebrity for 2016, by business magazine Forbes India.

Kohli is number one on the fame rankings, but drops to the third spot on the overall rankings behind Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. In third spot, the Delhi batsman is the highest-ranked sportsperson on the list.

The 28-year-old has had a fantastic year with the bat and has starred in his role as captain. He captained India in 12 Test matches this calendar year and did not taste defeat even once, winning nine of those games.

With the bat, Kohli notched up 1215 Test runs at an average of 75.93, which included three double centuries. In 10 ODIs, he scored 739 runs at an average of 92.37.

Kohli had an even better year when it came to T20 cricket, scoring 641 runs at a Bradman-esque average of 106.83. He was also named the Player of the Tournament at the ICC World T20 and the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Other Indian cricketers who are in the top 10 of the fame rankings are limited overs skipper MS Dhoni who is the fourth most popular Indian celebrity (fifth, overall) and legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar who is sixth (seventh, overall).

The overall rating was based on yearly earnings and popularity. The time window considered was between October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016.
