Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman raved about current Indian Test captain Virat Kohli’s batting, calling him a ‘complete batsman’.

Talking about Kohli’s conventional batting technique, Laxman mentioned that one of the reasons Kohli is very successful is because he has got his basics right.

“The reason I mention Virat a lot is because he knows his strengths and backs them. He is a conventional cricketer and has got a strong basis. If you are to perform consistently in all of the three formats, you should have strong basics, which Virat has,” Laxman said.

Kohli’s form in Test cricket hasn’t quite matched his exploits in the one-day game over the last few years, but Laxman is confident that the Delhi batsman will set the record straight soon. Kohli averages in the mid-40s in Test cricket which is a far cry from ODIs and T20Is where his average stands at 51.51 and 57.13 respectively.

“I feel Virat has a long way to go in Test match cricket but he will break all records. His average will be close to where his average currently is in ODIs and T20s. Virat is a complete batsman in this generation,” the former Hyderabad cricketer said.

Laxman further added that the Test captain has been a good influence on younger Indian batsmen, citing KL Rahul as an example.

Rahul was considered as a Test specialist when he made his debut for India in December 2014, but is now part of the Indian team in all three formats of the game.

“KL Rahul has transformed himself into a good T20 player and I believe that Virat has a huge influence on the transformation of Rahul. Rahul knows how to get runs in all three formats by playing in his normal, conventional, classical style,” Laxman said.
