The Bangladesh cricket team are set to play India in a historic one-off Test at Hyderabad, starting February 8 next year.

It will be Bangladesh’s first Test match on Indian soil since their entry into cricket’s longest format – with a home series against a Sourav Ganguly-led Indian side – in March 2000.

India is the last of the ICC full members to host Bangladesh for a Test.

“As a leading Test-playing nation it is BCCI’s responsibility to give opportunity to every Test playing nation,” BCCI president Anurag Thakur said.

“This will be a great addition to our home season 2016-17. It is my pleasure to announce the historic one-off Test match against our neighbours – Bangladesh early next year,”

India are set to play a bumper home season with as many as 13 Tests, eight ODIs and three T20Is on the cards in 2016-17.

Apart from their neighbours, New Zealand, England and Australia are also slated to tour India in this period.

The chief of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Nazmul Hassan, welcomed the move saying that the match is going to garner a lot of attention.

“For the cricketers who will be representing Bangladesh and India this will be a much-anticipated game and, given the competitive nature of their limited-overs matches in the recent past, I believe the clash between these two cricket crazy nations will catch the imagination.” he said.

Hassan also added that the end of a long wait to play a Test on Indian soil means it is a time for celebration in Bangladesh cricket.

It was earlier speculated that the game would be held in Kolkata, the erstwhile capital of undivided Bengal in pre-independent India. However, with Kolkata getting to host a game in the New Zealand series, by rotation the opportunity went to Hyderabad.
