The BCCI on Thursday announced that former India Test skipper Anil Kumble will be taking over as India’s head coach for a period of one year, ending days of speculation regarding who succeeds Duncan Fletcher in this role.

Speaking to media persons outside his house, Kumble conveyed his happiness at being back in the dressing room.

“It’s a great honour to be back in the dressing room in a different role. This is a huge responsibility and I thank the board and the Cricket Advisory Committee for showing faith in me,” he said.

The legendary leg-spinner added, “I have always put my hand up for challenges and I am ready to take up the role.”

On being asked about what his plan was to help Indian cricket become the best in the world, he said, “It’s too early for me to talk about a plan. The immediate series at hand is the tour to the West Indies and the strategy is to win. I haven’t spoken to the players yet as there’s time to work out how to go about it.”

Kumble, who was appointed by three of his former teammates, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman seemed optimistic about what lies ahead for Indian cricket.

“All five of us [Rahul Dravid included] have had a wonderful relationship both on and off the field and we will need to sit down and do what is needed for Indian cricket.”

The Karnataka bowler refused to comment on what he thought helped him edge out his competitors but said that he was honoured to get the role.

“I am honoured, I certainly felt it was time for me to give back. I had spoken to my family about it as it is not easy to travel 365 days. They’ve been very supportive and that was a major decision. Once that came about, I thought it was the right time.”

Kumble also added that he would do whatever is needed to be done to abide by BCCI’s guidelines on conflict of interest.
