Stock up on India stars

It is the Men in Blue who have the easiest game on paper in round six with Virat Kohli’s side set to take on tournament minnows Afghanistan. The Afghans have been beaten in all five games so far and have looked vulnerable with the bat.

Do not expect them to perform miracles against an India side firing on all cylinders. India’s top performers so far should be in high demand for the sixth round along with an in-form England outfit. The two teams have been the stand-out sides so far and have momentum coming into the latest round.

England take on Sri Lanka in round six and they should prove too strong for the subcontinent side, who have lost three of their five matches to date.

BATSMEN

Virat Kohli (11 credits)

The India skipper has already garnered 177 runs in three innings so far without even kicking into top gear. Excellent displays by India’s openers has meant Kohli has not spent as much time in the middle as he would have liked but still continues to deliver the goods with astonishing efficiency when called upon.

He has scores of 82 and 77 in his recent outings and should relish the prospect of taking on the Afghan bowling attack.

Rohit Sharma (10 credits)

A big reason why Kohli has not really been in the limelight is the form of Rohit at the top. The opening batsman’s three innings to date have yielded two tons and one half-century and he looks to be unstoppable at present.

Joe Root (10 credits)

The England stalwart is the glue that ties together an explosive batting unit and he has performed that job with distinction in this World Cup. Root is averaging nearly 92 with the bat and has already registered two tons while coming agonisingly close to a third against Afghanistan.

Root is having a magnificent World Cup.

BOWLERS

Kuldeep Yadav (8 credits)

The India wrist-spinner is starting to rediscover his best and will be licking his lips at the prospect of bowling to Afghanistan’s batsmen. He had a poor IPL campaign but looked in menacing form against Pakistan where he picked up two crucial wickets.

Jofra Archer (8.5 credits)

Sri Lanka’s batting hasn’t looked solid and they will have their task cut out against Archer who is in scorching form. The newly capped England pacer has clinched three-wicket hauls on four separate occasions in the tournament and his mean bouncers and pinpoint yorkers could be too hot to handle for the Lankans.

Pat Cummins (9 credits)

The Australian pacer has been his usual consistent self so far and has shared the new-ball responsibility excellently along with Mitchell Starc. Cummins has been averaging under 19 with the ball in the tournament and has already claimed 12 wickets in five games.

Cummins has delivered in every game.

ALL-ROUNDERS

Hardik Pandya (9 credits)

In keeping with the India heavy theme, Hardik could be a smart pick as the all-rounder option. The 25-year-old has already played three quick-fire cameos with the bat in the death overs while his medium pace saw his fetch two wickets against Pakistan.

He is yet to truly explode in the tournament and the Afghanistan clash might just be what he needs to do that.

Shakib Al Hasan (9 credits)

The Bangladesh star has arguably been the player of the tournament so far with 384 runs along with five wickets with the ball. The southpaw is enjoying batting in the No3 slot and is the highest run-getter in the tournament with the help of two tons and as many half-centuries.

WICKETKEEPER

Shai Hope (9.5 credits)

The Windies wicketkeeper-batsman has been in stellar form in ODI cricket over the past year or so and has carried the same destructive displays into the World Cup. He has managed two half centuries in three innings so far including a knock of 96 against Bangladesh and is averaging nearly 49.

Should carry on his excellent form against South Africa.
