There is a surprising record in 50-over World Cup history concerning the best strike-rate among bowlers and it does not have to include the legendary likes of Wasim Akram, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath or Shaun Pollock.

India’s medium pacer Zaheer Khan tops the list at just a fraction over at 27.1 after 23 world cup matches with 44 wickets.

Zaheer played an important role as the leading bowler in India’s World Cup triumph in 2011 and was one of the star performers of the team.

Another fact of 27 revolves around utility players, two match-winning all-rounders Steve Waugh of Australia and Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya, who both scored heavily for their respective teams but their contribution with the ball had been immense as well in World Cup history.

Both picked up 27 wickets in their career during World Cup campaigns and the duo ended up as World Cup winners – Jayasuriya winning it in 1996 when Sri Lanka stunned the world while Steve skippered Australia to victory in 1999.
