Steve Smith and David Warner shared a field in Australia for the first time since the scandal that rocked the country, but it was to be a brief reunion after Steve Waugh’s son had his say.

The grade cricket game between Warner’s Randwick Petersham and Smith’s Sutherland was played in front of a 2,000-strong crowd at the Coogee Oval in Sydney, with Shane Watson also involved while Mitchell Johnson and Steve Waugh watched on from the grandstand.

The pair came out to warm applause and autograph hunters, but Warner was soon walking back towards them and the pavilion after cutting Austin Waugh, the all-rounder who is 19 on Sunday, to backward point while on 13.

Upon his turn, Smith finished two shy of his half-century before being stumped, though Watson stole the show swashbuckling 41-ball 63 as Sutherland won by three wickets.

Smith and Warner were sent home in disgrace from Australia’s tour of South Africa in March for their role in attempting to alter the ball with sandpaper.

They were both banned from international and state cricket for a year, but are allowed to play at club level.
