Sussex prove too strong for Aboriginal XI squads with Jofra Archer in the wickets

Two Sussex teams stacked with international experience proved too strong for both the women’s and men’s 2018 Aboriginal XI squads today in Hove with comfortable victories in both matches. The loss for the Aboriginal men was their first on tour ending a three-game winning streak.

In the women’s fixture Sussex won the toss and sent the Aboriginal XI into bat and immediately set about building an intimidating total.

Paige Schofield (58) and Fran Wilson (53) smashed a 111-run partnership off 70 balls helping their side to 4-182 off their allocated overs.

In reply disaster struck early for the Aboriginal XI with key trio Ashleigh Gardner (0), Emma Manix-Geeves (1) and Hannah Darlington (4) all falling cheaply in the first three overs.

Despite some solid performances in the middle overs from Christina Coulson (33) and Roxanne van Veen (31), chasing down the huge total proved too much and the Aboriginal XI finished their 20 overs 79 runs short on 8-103.

In the men’s match Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett struck early claiming the wickets of Philip Salt and Luke Wright respectively and Sussex were 2-12.

Laurie Evans and Tom Bruce steadied the ship for the hosts before Ben Patterson claimed the wicket of Bruce.

Patterson followed up later clean bowling Evans for 44 before Michael Burgess and David Wiese put on a clinic to close out the innings for Sussex at 5-188. Burgess was dismissed for 44 off just 21 balls and Wiese remained undefeated just short of a half century on 49 off 21 balls.

In reply the Aboriginal XI struggled to find rhythm with the bat as the star-studded Sussex bowling line up of Danny Briggs, Jofra Archer, David Wiese and Chris Jordan took wickets at regular intervals.

Only Dan Christian (24) and Rex Strickland (21) really troubled the scoreboard as the visitors lowered their colours for the first time on tour with a comprehensive 99 run loss.
