Jonny Bairstow has been reprimanded and handed one demerit point for his reaction after being dismissed during the final T20I of the series against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday.

The opening batsman was punished for using an audible obscenity after he was caught by the wicket-keeper off the bowling of Jimmy Neesham during the fifth over of the innings. Bairstow’s utterance was picked up by the stump mic and “heard on TV”

The 30-year-old was found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct and admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Bairstow had earlier received a similar sanction this year, having picked up a demerit point for swinging his bat at the stumps in frustration during an ODI against Pakistan in May at Nottingham.
