Australia gained the upper hand on the opening day of the second Test against India at Perth on Friday.

Australia finished the day at 277/6, largely thanks to two partnerships, first a 112-run opening stand between Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch and then an 84-run stand for the fifth wicket between Shaun Marsh and Travis Head.

Harris, Finch, and Head all scored important 50s on a pitch that offered pace, extreme variable bounce and seam movement.

Ishant Sharma and part-time off-spinner Hanuma Vihari took two wickets each, while Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav picked up one apiece.
