UAE’s Shaiman Anwar scored 16 as his Edmonton Royals team was knocked out of the Canada Global T20 League on Thursday night in their Eliminator loss to Winnipeg Hawks.

Having finished fourth in the standings with two wins from six, Royals entered the Eliminator fixture against Hawks who sat above them in third place.

After being overlooked in the start of the tournament, Anwar became a consistent member of a squad that boasts the likes of former New Zealand batsman Luke Ronchi, ex-Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi and and South Africa’s Wayne Parnell.

Coming in at number six, the 38-year-old Anwar made an instant impact, hitting two sixes in his 11-ball stay.

That saw Royals reach an imposing total of 183-9 in their 20 overs. It seemed like they would be booking their place in Qualifer 2 but half-centuries from Australia’s David Warner (55) and Ben McDermott (65no) saw Hawks sneak through by seven wickets with one ball to spare.

Hawks will now play Vancouver Knights in the Qualifier 2, with the winner facing West Indies B in the final.

Anwar, skipper Rohan Mustafa, Mohammad Naveed and Ahmed Raza were the four UAE internationals to be drafted into the inaugural competition. Raza played one game for Royals, while Naveed took two wickets in three games for Toronto Nationals, who finished bottom of the group.
