The majority of cricket fans might not realise it but June 21 will go down in history as the day when two world titles were won at Lord’s.

Back in 1975, West Indies won the first-ever World Cup while more than 30 years later, Pakistan clinched their maiden World Twenty20 title.

Here, we look back to at those two thrilling finals.

1975 WORLD CUP FINAL

WEST INDIES BEAT AUSTRALIA BY 17 RUNS

More than 26,000 fans flocked to the Home of Cricket to witness the first World Cup final and they were not disappointed.

West Indies, boasting the likes of Sir Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd went into the game having won every match so far and they showed their class by taking early control.

Skipper Lloyd scored 102 from 85 balls. That set the Australians a target of 292 in 60 overs but a lack of concentration from their top batsmen including captain Ian Chappell (62) resulted in three run-outs thanks to Richard’s brilliant precision and instincts.

Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson added more runs but the Aussies fell to a 17-run defeat in a game that lasted more than 10 hours.

2009 WORLD TWENTY20 FINAL

PAKISTAN BEAT SRI LANKA BY EIGHT WICKETS

Two years after a heartbreaking loss to India, Pakistan ensured there was no repeat as Shahid Afridi led by example.

Chasing Sri Lanka’s 138 thanks to Kumar Sangakkara’s 64, the men in green were in trouble when their openers departed with 63 on the board.

But Afridi replicated his man of the match performance from the semi-finals to smash 54 from 40 deliveries and his runs as well as Shoaib Malik’s 24no saw Pakistan home with eight balls to spare.
