Steve Smith and David Warner have reportedly been handed 12-month bans by Cricket Australia for their roles in the ball-tampering scandal which erupted during the third Test of Australia’s series in South Africa.

Cameron Bancroft, the player who actually tampered with the ball, has been given a nine-month ban, with the punishment more severe for Smith and Warner for hatching the plan before Bancroft carried it out.

The duo were previously made to step down from their positions as captain and vice-captain during the third Test.

The ICC had already banned Smith for one Test in accordance with its protocol on ball-tampering, ruling him out of the final Test of the tour, which begins on Friday.

Smith is set to leave for Australia on Wednesday and will address the media once he arrives home.
